Work, Work, Work

Its been one of those weird periods where I haven't posted for a bit.  Firstly I took part in Nano and decided to get a good leap on the Christmas Issue of Falcata Times so having decided to do that, I didn't look at the proverbial mountain and think that it normally takes 10 + weeks of hard slog to produce, I grabbed the first stone and shifted it and Im carrying on shifting them towards my December 10th Issue.  So now with just over a week to go I've got all the interviews done, I've got the reviews done and I'm working on the last couple of special features and we're done.  So its a bit of an eekk moment.  Currently we're looking at roughly a hundred page issue, which will have everything from Christmas idea's to tons of reviews, from Interviews with Authors and Artists to Actors and Agents.  Its been fun and what Nano taught me is a huge lesson in time management, planning and above all settling down and getting the work done.

Its been epic and Im quite proud of the whole thing.

NaNoWriMo Nut job

Hey All,
Well Ive got an idea or two for Nano and whilst I was working on things, I thought, well I could write a story or two for Nano or I could attempt to put most of the next issue of Falcata Times together.  Yep thats right a two month work project into just over 4 week.   OOOOOooohhhhhh. yep insanity cannot be ruled out.  Still I thought it would be a fun thing to do and also something that will be interesting to try.  So with a deadline of 10th of December (mark that date in your diaries Peeps) and we'll hopefully have the new issue up.  Lots of goodies to boot and a few special features.

Getting Ready

OK we're coming up to Nano and with me having to go to a wedding tomorrow (thank the god/dess/e/s (hey you never know one religion might be wrong Ive at least covered my backside here.  LOL) that its not mine.)  Its my little sisters so that will make me the last one in my lot to tie the knot.  Eeekkkk, Viva La Revolution.

Anyway, so in preparation for Nano I've been getting my MP3 sorted with all sorts of goodies, fairly weird mix of stuff including:

Ghost Riders in the Sky - Spiderbait (If you've read earlier posts you saw that I'd rewritten one verse, Ive now done it for the full song as its for a key get to scene in the story.)
Abracadabra - Steve Miller Band.
Year of the Cat - Al Stewart
American Pie - Don McLean
Don't Fear the Reaper - BOC (although I couldnt find the Apollo 440 Dance version)
Hotel California - The Eagles
I Only Have Eyes for You - The Flamingo's
Lola - The Kinks
Nights in White Satin - Moody Blues
Moonlight Shadow - Maggie Smith and Mike Oldfield
Whenever, Wherever - Shakira
Mrs Robinson - Simon and Garfunkel.
Son of  a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield
Lady Eleanor - Lindesfarne
Indiana Wants Me - R Dean Taylor
Can you Forgive her? - Pet Shop Boys
I Touch Myself - The Divinyls
Teardrop - Massive Attack
End of the Line - Traveling Wilburys
The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel
Come Undone - Duran Duran
Knights of Cydonia - Muse
Diane - Therapy

They don't necesarily go in the order here although each is key to help get a scene or character across so if you know the tracks you can see that its going to be one hell of a ride.

Self Publication and the Reviewer

Whilst the world shouts and gives Kudos to the latest independent film to be released the independent author is the person who has long been left in the darkness and ignored by the majority of reviewers.  Why is this?

Well to be blunt it’s purely for the fact that the independent author really hasn’t had to go through that many checks.  Yes their work may be outstanding in their own opinion but to be brutal here, it would be.  Its like those people that you see queuing up for shows like X-Factor with that belief that they are the next big thing but when you here them are totally tone deaf and refuse to even hear someone pointing the truth out to them.

Most reviewers won’t touch Vanity Press, as to be honest the industry has no checks on the quality of the piece and if you’ve got the cash to spend, well, someone’s going to take it aren’t they.  Its one reason on places like MySpace and Facebook along with numerous emails I always request that people who are “independent” don’t send manuscripts or self published books.  Occasionally I do receive one and some of them are OK but currently not what’s in vogue.  However what I think is more telling is when you write back and say “You do realise that I say what I think and the review may not be favourable don’t you?”  And that’s the last that you hear from them.  That’s quite telling and to be honest whilst they do have a book out, for all I know it could be Johnny’s “Shining” script all over again (All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy.)

Now before you get uppity and say I have no idea about the struggles that the independent goes through or what about X, Y or Z who was originally an independent and went on to be republished by a known House.  Yep I am aware of them but these are the exceptions, these were authors whose books were either ahead of their time or became an underground cult following.  You have no idea how rare these are in a world where millions are made from appealing to people’s vanity with many of these books being blatant rip offs of other tales out there.  It’s sickening, annoying and at times so damn frustrating that it’s difficult to keep your temper at those who prey on people’s narcissistic temperament.  Everyone deserves a chance but it has to be done right.

Publishing houses (or the major ones) have quality checks, many state that they won’t accept unsolicited manuscripts and that you have to go through an agent which allows them a vetting process.  Likewise the other angle of things is that submissions have to follow guidelines from type of paper to font to spacing and even including font size.  If some of these requests aren’t met what could be the next Lord of the Rings ends up in the bin without being read.  They’re that strict.

The other thing that you need to ask yourself is how thick is your skin?  Why?  Well writing is like gladiatorial combat, you’re going to get numerous chunks torn out of you and you have to be able to take it.  If you can’t then writing really isn’t for you.  Many of the known names in today’s publishing industry have undergone that trial by fire and whilst is a hard thing to hear there are coping strategies although if you’re honest you will have to admit that they have a point if it’s a comment that comes back time and again.

So what can you do to combat a lot of these problems and give yourself a good chance at getting out there?  Follow the guidelines and also join a writing group, there’s plenty out there that will give you honest advice along with generally helping you with questions that need answering about the project.  Other than that you have to write, write and write some more and keep submitting to those publishers that accept them along with agents.  Eventually you’ll get there but never expect writing to be something that pays the bills.  Think of it another way, if you were to go panning for gold you have to go through a ton of stuff to maybe find that one speck, so theres a whole host of specks and then suddenly you find a huge chunk.  Woohhoo, money up the wazoo as they say.  But look at what you have, a whole load of specks but just the one chunk, authors are like gold in that respect, there’s thousands of specks but only one or two chunks.  Writing is something done for pleasure, very few make a living at it and even fewer make serious cash out of the deal.  So rather than thinking I’ll publish my opus myself, rethink, get some honest feedback from a writers group and then when its polished to the best of your ability, submit to agents.  But don’t above all else take the self publishing route as that way leads to heartache and the emptying of wallets that few can afford.

Writing is the work of the devil

Yep, today Ive been sat down writing like a maniac, Ive fully planned my short story to "play" with the character.  I've also taken the time to get a lot more done on FT and so far I know we're talking a Monster Issue.   Anyway I was sat there thinking about things that I used to say.  First of all that ancient and perhaps universal prayer :

"I will never turn into my parents and I swear that I will be the Uber Cool person that everyone wishes were their Mum or Dad."

You know that prayer, that mantra?  Yeah well I've found myself breaking it more and more.  First of all I was flicking through some of the music channels and suddenly thought "What on earth is this crap and how can they call it music."  Yep a line my Dad has said for years.  I have everything from Folk Music (including Maddy Prior (a great lady), Clannad, Caroline Lavelle) to Roots Rock (Oysterband) from Punk (some Pistols) to Old School (or Skool) Metal which includes Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim etc.)  I even have stuff going up to Rage Against the Machine and Nirvana.  Everything is original releases and yet I still uttered that immortal phrase.  I even uttered the worst of all which shows that youre getting old.  I walked past M&S' window and thought "That looks nice."  You might as well take me out and shoot me now.  My day is done, Im officially ancient.

Book is taking shape

OK, Im making myself a promise.  When I've put the current issue of Falcata TImes to bed, Im taking some Me time.  Yep Im going to attempt to get my first fully planned tale to life.  (Cue Lightening.....and Mad Frankenstien Laugh)

Yep the plans on paper, Ive one major behind the scenes villain, one major Im going butt kicking villain, a couple of supernatural flunkies and of course more fun than you can poke a stake at.  LOL  Madness, mayhem, possibly a high body count and a tale that plays with British mythology to the max.  Secretly Im hoping for around 300 pages of  manuscript which word count wise will be somewhere between 85-120K.  So Im hoping to roughly have a first draft kicked out by years end.  However FT will continue to be done and I will be looking for some test readers when I have the first draft ready to get thier opinion on the characters and what needs adding/removing etc and then will set about draft 2 onwards.  So heres hoping that the Velocorapter will roar, the weaponry will clash and the epic ride to the last battle will be something spectacular (routes planned already.)  I might also be rewriting a certain song just so I can have the fun of recording it on MP3 to listen to as I write.

With slight rewrite:
Upon Stonehenge she rested whilst the storm raged all around
The chalk white horses bloody as they charged across the ground
A bolt of fear went through her as they thundered through the sky
For she saw the Hunt riding hard and she heard thier bloody Cry.

In my defence

No Im not going all Freddie Mercury on you all.  LOL  Its just a case of things seem to suddenly pile up and require a few days fo solid flat out work.  Just as you seem to get one thing done another project drops in your lap with a fine deadline, thats damn tricky to do.  So whilst the writing is still being figured out, I have at least managed to sort out whats workable as a single project, whats a long term idea and whats going to blend together to work for a single book.

Other than that Im hard at work on the next issue of Falcata Times (out July, a plethora of interviews, a huge selection of reviews and dare I say it, an ezine that is going to at the least match the regular mags on a one to one page basis (even including thier ad pages) whereas I dont.  So big woohhoo.

With luck I'll also get some feedback from you so that I can see what works, what doesnt work and above all what type of features people would like to see added so we can go from there.

Anyway, back to the grindstone, Ive a pile of books that won't read themselves.  LOL

Recent Developments

Hey all,
Well its been a while since I updated but thought that I'd better do so.  Writing has currently taken a bit of a back seat whilst I work incessantly on Falcata Times.  Well with the new issue out and the next one currently well in hand (I have three interviews ready to roll) Ive decided to get back to getting on with my own tales of Daring Do.  LOL

Now recently problems with this is that I keep getting visits from the Ninja Plot Bunnies who keep throwing curve balls my way.  Why do you ask?  Well to be honest I had the idea ready to roll and all of a sudden I heard the character voice saying "Dont forget about my time in the Navy."  I mean what the hell?  What time in the Navy?  Are we talking real navy or sort of Village People "In the Navy"?  Well after laughing my ass off for a few minutes at that thought I sat down and worked out what was what.

1)  She originally signed up for a tour as it meant 3 sqares a day.
2)  Navy was safest Armed Service as the Supernaturals and salt water arent exactly on the best of buddy terms.  (Main encounters are Ghost Ships but Im not going too into that as theres details that I dont want to ruin the plot.)  LOL
3)  It made sure that her mechanic training was all done as well as throwing in some weapons handling and general self defence.

So now rather than working on a full story Im planning a short story for her to feature in just to "road test" her as a character.  IE will she be strong enough to carry a plot on her own or does she need some serious work.  Now hopefully I'll be able to get the short story written shortly (no pun intended) just to see how things pan out.  So prepare for it in the OWG or in your mail box.

Work, work, work.

Its been a while since I posted however Ive not be lazy, Ive been doing quite a lot of work, lots of stuff for Falcata Times (my ezine, plug plug) and getting ready to put together an image to use for my female protagonist.  Hopefully when ready I can put a shot up to surprise peeps so I can then get some feedback from you all to check if the name fits with the image and that the overall look works.  (Hey Im a basic guy, I know nothing about fashion.)

The Temptation of Being an Evil God.

To be honest Im having fun reading a friends blog and joining in on the coffee break fiction talks, todays subject included a discussion on the possibility of being an Evil God.  As author that means are you prepared to let the character get some happiness before ripping it out of thier hands in much the same way Whedon has in Buffy and Angel.  Im not an "Evil God."  That would pertain to taking sides, I dont I just set up the domino's and wait to see how they fall.

In other blog news, Tatty, my Insulin Dependent Cat doenst have to go back to see his arch nemesis (Mr Vet) for 3 months, so he's a happy cat currently, although he's making damn sure that his "hummies" are loving, tickling and above all submitting to his ruling.  That has also included him getting a Lamb Shank as a special treat, however he has magnanamously agreed to share it with his subordinates and said that his hummies are allowed the bone, as they wont appreciate the meat as much as he and his buddys do.

Go figure.

Anyway if you want to join in with other writers in discussions be you published or not then please visit [info]ajmenden and join other likeminded individuals.  Look forward to seeing your POV.

Thieving toe rags

OK I go out to my car today to find that some little scumbag has ripped my passenger wing mirror off, smashed the mirror and then left it in some plant pots nearby.  Why am I so annoyed?  Well its going to cost me to put it right, however its due to the local pub over tanking these idiots with beer.  They accept no responsibility for what they do and just say that its hard luck.  What am I going to do.  I am going to oppose thier licence and also inform the local cops whenever any incident occurs so that they then oppose the licence as well.

Im not vindictive but when no responsibility is taken by anyone and Im basically told that its just life then I get annoyed.  Had they said that they were sorry that would help but at the moment I have to worry about them over tanking again and I have to replace it more than once on the build up to christmas.

Life is ....

Well they say that life is but a dream well, someone wake me up.  My boiler is making funny noises so Ive had to switch the damn thing off and the earliest that they can be bothered to come and look is tomorrow.  So guess what, no heating or hot water for two days because they cant be bothered to come and look.  Im not happy and my kitties are not happy as they like the house toasty for them to be happy.

More on this as I find out.

(no subject)

Well Im getting ready for Nano, planning like mad and all of a sudden get smacked in the face by a new character who has decided that he just had to make an appearance at the very least.  Talk about sods law.  Also getting ready for a lot of reading to catch up with some of my backlog and getting ready for Christmas.  Why so early?  Well Ive got all my shopping done so I dont have to worry about it so woohhooo.

And finally, will shortly be posting the image for my christmas card this year.  Its going to be a bit of a weird one but hey, what do people expect.  LOL

Why oh Why oh Why?

Well with Nano swiftly approaching I have just so much work to do to prepare and getting ready at times feels like a hell of a chore.  I really want to get motivated as I have a cracking idea but Im not usually much of a planner for things and like to fly by the seat of my trousers.  Into the fray dear friends and all that.  Find that it makes things interesting but when you hear everyone saying "You simply must have a plan otherwise it wont work."  I start getting down after a bit.  So here I am with a week to go and only a rough plan.  So over the course of this week I will endeavour to try and get some of it sorted so that there is a formula to function with.

First Entry

Well it had to happen at some point so here we go.  Been working hard on a number of projects and preparing for the infamous NaNoWriMo, if youre in there as well, say Hi.  Likewise others may be wondering who the hell I am, well, Im known in most places as Drosdelnoch so here it was easier to go with the Ezine name I run to keep things rolling fine.  So Hi guys whove just stopped by to check me out.  LOL

Hope you have fun and remember to add me as a buddy.  LOL
